  • Azerbaijan and the U.S. Expand Military Cooperation

    Hidayatullah.com--Government of Azerbaijan and the United States will continue the expansion of military cooperation between the two countries, according to a statement kepresidenanan media office in Baku on Monday.

    According to the statement quoted by Xinhua on Tuesday (22/11/2011), President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has met with officials of the United States Navy, Ray Mabus, on Monday (11/21/2011). Both sides expressed satisfaction over the bilateral cooperation in various fields.



    Both stressed that their country has been successful in the field of military cooperation and such cooperation will continue.

    Mabus, who ended his official visit to Azerbaijan for three days on Monday, also discussed security issues, energy and transport with Aliyev.

    Government of the United States, said Mabus, highly appreciated Azerbaijan's participation in international peace missions in Afhganistan.

    Mabus is a peace mission was the presence of foreign troops led by the United States to combat Islamic resistance groups to Afghanistan, which are labeled by Washington as the War on Terror.

    Azerbaijan is one of the countries logistics supply transit point for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. And is one of the countries supplying the energy needs of European countries.

    Beginning September 2011, the Department of Defense United States reportedly offered Azerbaijan a grant of USD 10 million, in the form of military aid to help the naval forces against terrorism.

    The grant is part of USD 44 million assistance package from the Pentagon to Tunisia, Malta, Lithuania and Hungary.

    During their stay in Azerbaijan, Mabus also met with Defense Minister Safar Abiyev and the Navy High Command Shahin Sultanov. *
